Intraoral Camera
What Is An Intraoral Camera?
An intraoral camera is a small video camera that takes picture images of a patient’s oral cavity (teeth and gums). These images are then immediately seen on a TV monitor for the dentist to review with the patient. The intraoral camera resembles an oversized pen and although usage varies depending on the model-type, this image-taking device is typically outfitted with a disposable protective sheath for each new patient. While simultaneously viewing a monitor, the dentist inserts the camera into a patient’s mouth and gently shifts it about so that images can be taken from a variety of angles.
The dental intraoral camera handpiece is approximately the size and shape of a dental mirror. It has a built-in light source, and serves as a tiny video camera that allows us to zoom in on one tooth with 25 times magnification, or give you a “video tour” of your entire mouth. The images are displayed on a computer monitor, so you’ll be able to see problems such worn or broken fillings, cracked teeth, plaque deposits, cavities next to fillings and excessive wear.
